Outer Space for Development: Policy, Business and Regulatory Summit

SPARC and Nova School of Law, alongside Vieira de Almeida (VdA) and the European Centre for Space Law (ECSL) organised the first Industry Day held in Portugal, entitled “Outer Space for Development: Policy, Business and Regulatory Summit”. The event took place at VdA’s offices in Lisbon, on 21 May 2018

The Summit aimed to illustrate the exciting developments taking place in the Portuguese space sector, with a particular focus on industrial development, national space strategy and the development of a national space law. Overall, the Summit seeked to highlight the usefulness of space in a national context, but also the broader European and global efforts to ensure space becomes a valuable tool for development and modern societies.

Speakers included high level representatives from the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, European Union, European Space Agency and Portuguese Government. There were also present experts from industry, academia and other national governments to offer their thoughts. The day was sectioned into three main segments:

– Space Policies
– Space Business
– Legal and Regulatory

The three segments sought to provide a holistic picture of the necessary elements to promote a successful space sector. As well, as the benefits of doing so.

The event preceded the opening of the 2018 European Rounds of the Manfred Lachs Moot Court.
